Daylight and Trader Joes

Posted on Mar 9th, 2009 by Walla-Rudy : Being the Change Walla-Rudy

Taking full advantage of the extra daylight we now have in the evening, I decided to stroll over to Trader Joes (yes, walking), re-useable grocery bag in hand. There is something quite nice and energetic in the neighborhood between the hours of 6:30 and 7:30pm. There are many folks out walking . . themselves, their dogs, and children on foot and in strollers. It's just a really feel good atmosphere.

I succeeded in only purchasing one grocery bag of items at the store. It's really easy to buy more at Trader Joes with all of their unique and tasty products. I was able to cut my grocery spending in half this time around and got exercise in the process.

The fellow handling the register I was at sighed as I said hello, how are you? I could tell he had answered that question one too many times today and was tired of giving the standard answer. As he bleeped the very few items I had in the red basket he mentioned how there just has to be a way to finally be able to enjoy life. He remarked that it's like we are all on treadmills getting no where but thinking we are advancing. It's like he plucked the thoughts that were in my mind all day right from my brain and spoke them. No matter how much time, effort or money we through at life, we as a human race cant seem to simplify and enjoy the goodness of life. It's always at a distance, out of reach, requiring more effort and stress and so we all just keep on doing what we have all been told must be done . . . work hard and you will get ahead. I sympathized with my fellow man as he finished the process of bleeping and bagging. We both gave each other an encouraging smile of hope and parted ways as he started the next order and I started my walk home.

As can be seen by this write up, our conversation remained on my mind all the way home. I have even placed making dinner on hold just to write this. As I walked home, I noticed countless pieces of trash, mindlessly tossed to the street, the grass and other places. There were coffee cups, bags, a broken wine bottle, a used up tube of toothpaste and much more. It is clear to me that most of mankind seems to feel just as stuck on a treadmill and that true freedom and happiness in life can only be secured in the items we buy, things we consume and people we are able to sucker into ownership disguised as loving relationships. It is forever true that actions speak not just louder than words. . . . actions are all there is. As we continue to witness everyone mindlessly taking advantage of the earth and each other, we see the truth, our current social agreement really isn't working. We all pretend that it is, but when the action facts are stacked up, it quite clear that it is not.

I continue to embrace the hope that we, as a world society will wake up, stop talking and start being. I long for that. That is my deepest desire. I believe it is possible.

Be well.

Have an Amazing Weekend with Me

Please take time to read this post and really consider what I am sharing. I am currently at a three day conference that is beyond description without actually attending. If you know me well enough, I am not one to exaggerate. Clearly I am experiencing something that is life altering and it would be an honor if you could join me by doing one simple thing. In the midst of economic and other types of challenges, giving is the a very healing act. The organization putting on this even has pledged to help two families in San Diego and to help people in Liberia, Africa. My team adopted the Take Wing Family. They are in need of many things which are listed below, but if you would prefer to make a monetary donation you can do so online or contact me. Of course, your donation is tax deductible. We have partnered with San Diego Youth Services to adopt this family and any donation can be made at https://secure2.convio.net/sdycs/site/Donation2?idb=0&df_id=1600&1600.donation=form1&JServSessionIdr008=47m02393x1.app6a We are presenting the results of the giving on Sunday at 10am, so if you intend to give please do so before Sunday at 10am if at all possible. Let me know what you have given if you can. If you would prefer to give in another fashion the family needs the following (just let me know and we can work out how to get the items to the family in San Diego): House Lamp Knife Set Coffee Table Bathroom Set Vacuum Entertainment Center for living room Apple Computer Grocery gift cards Walmart or Target gift cards Tickets to Disneyland Tickets to San Diego Zoo If you are interested in the efforts in Liberia, Africa there are efforts to build schools, provide books, empower women to own their own businesses and more. You can look at the following sites to see which effort in Liberia touches you most. www.unstoppablegivingchalleng.com www.childrenoftheworld.info www.doactnow.org www.angelsinthedust.com When a lot of folks give just a little bit, it adds up to major impact. Thank you for taking the time to partner with me in healing our world.

Another "Helping" Please

Last night, yes Valentine Day, I was honored to participate in the volunteer activities of Greater West Hollywood Food Coalition.

Their mission is to feed the homeless and hungry of our community a hot, fresh, and nutritious meal every day, seven days a week, throughout the year. To do it in such a way as to give back to the people we serve a sense of their own dignity, and to restore their confidence in being able to resume their place in society with the rest of us, as productive citizens -- in short, to treat them like individual human beings in temporary distress, instead of as untouchables.

They recycle food from all available sources in Los Angeles (hotels, restaurants, bakeries, grocery stores, produce markets, caterers, film studios, airlines), so as to provide ourselves with a continuing supply of the highest quality fresh food AT NO COST, while at the same time involving the community at large in what we do.

I was touched by the camaraderie of all of us volunteers as we had fun loading the truck, setting up, communicating with and providing food to those in need, packing up operations and cleaning up the dishes back at HQ.

The cool winter air was chilly out there on the mostly barren corner occupied by four large wharehouse-like buildings and a long line of hungry people. Even so, there was so much warmth in the giving and receiving that I could have done it much longer. Turns out that volunteering to help serve is 2 hours or less of my time. I surely have two or more hours of sheer boredom that shows up in my weekend. It just goes to show that a little giving makes a huge difference when enough folks give just a little. Instead of allowing my idle mind to become the devils playground, I am able to connect, grow, learn, love and allow all of that to step me into my dreams of the future.

There was so much food. More than enough to go around which allowed the homeless to take extra food to last them into breakfast and even lunch the next day. Their was loads of appreciation being given back to us, the volunteers, as each person expressed thanks as they accepted our gesture of generosity.

So, as each person came back for another "Helping", I am excited and thrilled to say I want to participate in another "Helping". Thank you.

What is Rudy R. Garcia Up to?

Posted on Feb 6th, 2009 by Walla-Rudy : Being the Change Walla-Rudy

If I am serious about making my dreams become manifest in the physical world, I have to share it and be accountible to others for what I am intentioning.

I am feeling particularly driven to get to work on making my long held dreams, reality.

I know that you and certain other good people in my life will encourage me to press on with my dreams!  If, by chance, you are inspired to go after your long held dreams, I would be happy to encourage and be a resource to you as well.

The fact is that I just can't hold off any longer.  I must do these things.  Anything less is not what I was born to do.  As you know I am not interested in fortune nor fame but I am all for making a profound difference.  Other's have made profound differences in their own way and I want to contribute profoundly as well.

1) I need to get through the HUB training I've received.  It is much more comprehensive than I expected and that is very good.  It came with a workbook and I have some work to do to get very clear on my vision, passion and what it will take in terms of time and money to get there.  HUB is the organization that has the infrastructure that will support my success (www.ri.hubhub.org).

2) I am developing very specific goals and put dollar and time amounts on each so I am clear on what I am going to attain.  Some of these goals include being completely debt free (homes and all), giving significant amounts and time and money to adopted charities and individuals annually, travelling to international locations to volunteer, learn the language and culture and build a network of caring connections around the world, ensure my parents are completely provided for and empowered in their retirement and help other family members are empowered to be great in their lives.

3) I have put back into practice my meditation time (I used to do it daily) where I focus on the vision, feel the feelings of it already being attained, speaking affimatively the words to make it a present reality in the physical and take the actions necessary that demontrate or help accomplish the results in the physical.

4) I am going to shift back to a mostly vegan/mostly raw diet and choose 3 days each month to do a modified cleansing fast.  This means I have some grocery shopping to do.

5) I'm redesigning my fitness program to get results and do it in a way that is sustainable over the long haul.

6) I'm researching places that offer musical instrument lessons (guitar, piano, drums), singing lessons and dancing lessons (swing, salsa, tango), language lessons (Spanish, Japanese, Italian, French, Arabic, ASL)

7) I'm seeking local volunteer opportunities and am going to put into place a standard practice of volunteering:

Locally: Up to 4 hours every other week.
Other US Cities: Up to 4 hours per visit.
International Travel: Short Trips Up to 4 hours (Long trips of two weeks or more: make it a volunteer vacation where I volunteer a little every day about 5 days a week and combine it with learning the culture and language of the area and live with a host family)

8) I'm am attracting a partner that has passion for and is participaing in something that contributes to the betterment of our world and even if it does not match up with mine, we support each other and both of our visions intertwine to accomplish something greater than either would on it's own.

As you can see, I will continue to have a fun filled, eventful life of making a profound difference in my own life and others around the world.

Thank you for supporting me in this ongoing mission of my hear and soul.

Something Special about San Francisco

I think that volunteering just makes a place more beautiful.  The perfectly sunny and cool morning up on the hillside of Twin Peaks pulling weeds, collecting trash and learning about nature and the environment while making new friends all with a 360 degree view of the bay area and San Francisco cannot be beat easily.

This is really the only way to travel and visit other places.  What a cool world this would be if all of us who could do it, would do it.  I hope you will consider making a difference with me in volunteering and in giving Humanity Unites Brilliance some deep heartfelt consideration.  Come visit me at www.now-faith-is.hubhub.org.

Be well.

Assessment of a Dream

Posted on Jan 9th, 2009 by Walla-Rudy : Being the Change Walla-Rudy
14581_the_lady_and_the_flag
Conversations with friends, family and acquaintances paired up with several conversations a day with small business owners and then colored by the local and national news as opposed to the news as reported by other countries has led me to re-assess my dream; fine tune it, if you will.

The clear slowing of the economy started a rumbling.  Here in the USA where we are taught to value the ideas of independence, self reliance and other similar notions, people are finding that they are connecting and talking more than ever and that all of us are really in the same boat.  When we strip away all of the distractions that money can buy, what are all of us left with?  In some cases, many of us have developed a deeper appreciation for life and skills that allow us to thrive even when money is no longer a distraction.  I would argue that a vast majority of us do not have that foundation to rest upon.  The idea of consumerism and money making the world go round has been so thoroughly permeated into the psyches of the majority that it sends people off the deep end into hard core depression, hopelessness, and even suicide.

There is a moment in which each human being face to face with this challenge has to choose to become more, learn more and connect with his/her community or become the worst case outcome justifying cheating others, stealing and even sometimes killing others to survive.

I like to believe that mankind will rise to the occasion.

I still have a dream but now it has become bigger than ever.  I never realized how hard it would be to get just one other person to envision the dream and become partners in fulfilling the dream which leaves me completely on foreign ground when it comes to establishing a community of people ready to make the dream a reality let alone a city, state, nation or even our entire world.

I know there are many people involved in aspects of affecting the change that humanity and our planet not only need but cannot survive without.  The rampant way of living and being currently perpetuated in the wold today is not sustainable indefinitely.

As I re-assess my dream I am hopeful for those connections that will build that relationship, that community, that city, state, nation and world that rises above money, power and possessions and values exploration, evolution of thought, imagination, experience, and relationships among mankind.  This will be a world where no one goes without food, warmth, rest or love except by choice.

How do we do it?  It's inevitable and I truly believe it is the natural order of life to bring us to that point.  In the meantime I choose to live as much as possible being that change I look so forward to see in our world.

Be well mankind.

Lyrics to "First Time" by Lighthouse. Love this song.

Lifehouse - First Time

"First Time"

We're both looking for something
We've been afraid to find
It's easier to be broken
It's easier to hide

Looking at you,holding my breath,
For once in my life,I'm scared to death,
I'm taking a chance,letting you inside.

Feeling alive all over again,
As deep as the sky, under my skin
Like being in love, she says
For the first time
Maybe I'm wrong,
But I'm feeling right where I belong
With you tonight
Like being in love
To feel for the first time

The world that I see inside you
Waiting to come to life
Waking me up to dreaming
Reality in your eyes

Looking at you,
Holding my breath,
For once in my life
I'm scared to death,
I'm taking a chance,
Letting you inside.

I'm feeling alive all over again
As deep as the sky that's under my skin
Like being in love, she says, for the first time
Maybe I'm wrong, I'm feeling right
Where I belong with you tonight
Like being in love to feel for the first time

We're crashing
Into the unknown
We're lost in this
But it feels like home

I'm feeling alive all over again
As deep as the sky that's under my skin
Like being in love, she says, for the first time
Maybe I'm wrong, I'm feeling right
Where I belong with you tonight
Like being in love to feel for the first time

Holiday Tour Part VI: Welcome to 2009

I feel ill from what I figure was food poisoning on New Years Eve.  Some how  I managed to stay up with the rest of the world to ring in.  The next three days I spent recovering.  Don't feel bad for me as I was so blessed by friends whom brought me warmth, alka seltzer, pedialite, soup and other healing loving remedies.

Today I am fully recovered and overflowing with energy.  Learning the value of my health again is a great way to start the new year.  It's time to get crackin'.

So ends the six part holiday tour.  We've been to San Diego twice, Seattle, Austin, San Francisco and ended in LA for New Years.  This year was the greatest of all seasons.  It was not filled with material gifts but was filled with rich experiences and connections for which I am completely thankful.  May your 2009 find the same.
